This, and similar questions like, 'What happens if you put a Jellycat in the washing machine?' and 'Why is my Jellycat not soft anymore?' are answered here!
Firstly, 'Can you put Jellycat in the washing machine?'
Officially Jellycat's stance has always been to 'hand wash only' or even 'only surface wipe', but times have changed, and now the advice depends upon the design, for example, some of the world famous Jellycat Bashful Bunnies carry a recommendation that it is OK to use a '30 degree celsius wash' with provisos that you 'do not tumble dry, dry clean or iron' the product.
Some of the bunnies carry further recommendations that they are 'not recommended for children under 12 months due to fibre shedding'.
The brand new Jellycat Bashful Luxe Willow Bunny and Rosa are examples of this new advice.
Size: Huge 51 x 21 cm
RRP £75.00 Each
Our Price £72.45 Each
However, things like the 'Jellycat Bashful Tulip Pink Bunny Really Big' still carries the original advice, 'Hand wash only; do not tumble dry, dry clean or iron. Not recommended to clean in a washing machine.'
It becomes apparent that either the new designs are made from slightly different washable material, or, the Jellycat site information hasn't been updated yet.
Definitely, all of the longer haired designs like Jellycat Oswald Orangutan, still carry the 'Hand wash only....' instructions.
So, it becomes apparant that the only surefire way to be assured, is to carefully read all of the label instructions when your design arrives. Jellycat, by law, have to give accurate information on these labels.
This leads on nicely to the second question, 'What happens if you put a Jellycat in the washing machine?'.
Well, we had four children, all within 3 years and 10 months (no twins) and because we have always loved Jellycat, they all grew up with their own favourite designs.
As you can imagine it was pandemonium, toys and accidents everywhere, so it was difficult keeping their beloved Jellycats in good condition. At first we tried hand washing, followed by the subsequent hairdrying.
This worked, but if it was a particularly soiled stain, it tended to leave their fur slightly 'crispy'.
So we finally opted for the washing machine on a cool, delicate cycle using a mild, non-toxic soap, with the offending Jellycat placed inside a pillowcase.
We allowed it to dry naturally and then used a hairdryer on warm, together with a fine brush to gently 'fluff up' the fur.
For us this worked, and we managed to get really good results.
This is of course NOT the official recommendation.
The answer to 'Why is my Jellycat not soft anymore?' is almost certainly an attempted cleaning that went slightly wrong.
If you follow our proceedure you may have better luck.
We hope that this fully answers the question: 'Can you put Jellycat in the washing machine?'.
